My out of state friend took over a year to buy window treatments for her home. One trend that is always in style is using window treatments that allow a lot of natural light into the space. Plantation shutters have a long life and require less maintenance than other window treatments. There are three main types of plantation shutters, hardwood, vinyl and basswood.

Basswood plantation shutters are warp resistant and nicely show the grain staining in the wood. They can be painted in any color and they are easily installed. Most basswood plantation shutters are custom made to fit your windows. However, they are made of wood, so overtime, they may show wear and tear.

Hardwood plantation shutters are custom made from hardwood trees like cedar, alder and poplar. They are the most popular of the plantation shutters because of their durability, strength, appeal and low maintenance. For an upscale appearance in your home, hardwood shutters are a great option.

Vinyl plantation shutters are more economical in comparison to hardwood and basswood shutters. Also custom made, the vinyl is more durable than wood and they are not as prone to showing wear and tear. They are a great option for the kitchen and bath because they are more resistant to heat and steam. While they do not fade or develop cracks, they are not as authentic and rich looking as a traditional wooden plantation shutter.

Using color in your home can be fun and daunting. Choosing the right color can be hard because there are so many different colors to choose from. But you can reflect your personal style by mixing colors through window treatments, accessories, and fabrics in a room. 

Colors you like should be the colors you use in your window treatments.
